This year has been a memorable one for Apple, largely due to the new Mac products and features designed to stay ahead of the competition. As we close out 2022, there’s plenty to reflect upon.
After Apple teased us with a new Mac Pro back in September, prompting us to “wait and see”, it looks like their plans have changed; that doesn’t mean we aren’t seeing any releases this year – the impressive Mac Studio and M2 MacBook Air have been getting attention.
Apple’s Mac Pro
Apple has been in the process of getting rid of Intel chips since 2020, and it’s expected that by 2023 the entire Mac lineup will feature Apple silicon chips. The Mac Pro is one line of Macs that still use Intel chips, but a new model is in the works.
This guide details all the information we have on Apple’s plans for the upgraded Mac Pro.
Mac Studio and the Future of the Mac Pro
A while ago, rumors arose about a diminutive edition of the Mac Pro being created. However, this device eventually became the Mac Studio in March 2022.
At the Mac Studio event, Apple confirmed that the smaller desktop machine is not meant to replace the Mac Pro.

Design
The structure of the Mac Pro is forecasted to remain the same with its stainless steel frame and aluminum housing, dual-sided logic board, and uncomplicated accessibility to components; however, there has been no suggestion if the thermal structure will be altered. It will still be equipped with three-dimensional interlocking hemispheres aiding in heat dispersion.
For the Mac Pro, there has been no mention of any design changes, so while interior upgrades could take place, the outside will more than likely stay largely similar. The main emphasis will be on switching from Intel chips to professional Apple silicon chips.

Apple Silicon Chips
The Mac Studio is equipped with an M1 Ultra chip, which consists of two M1 Max chips being connected. It can provide outstanding performance with its 20-core CPU.
Although, at one point there was speculation that Apple would design an even more robust chip named the M2 Extreme, the project has since been canceled. The M2 Ultra will sports a 24-core CPU, up to 76 GPU cores as well as a minimum of 192GB RAM.
The M2 Extreme chip was planned to have a 48-core CPU and 152-core GPU, but due to cost and difficulty in production, it was dropped.
Release Date
The Mac Pro is expected at some point in 2023, according to Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman. A launch will likely happen early in the year, perhaps during a spring event or WWDC in June 2023.
