If you’re like most people who own a Samsung Galaxy S8, then there’s an easy way to remove the Gear VR headset from your device without taking it apart. However, it’s a bit complicated, which means it’s probably not for beginner owners.
To use this technique, you’ll need an Android device and a USB cable. Download ADB from Google Play. Plug your phone into your PC via USB.
ADB Installation Steps
Here are the steps for installing ADB:
- Go to a web browser and type “Android SDK Platform Tools”.
- Click on the first hyperlink from the official website.
- Scroll down to the downloads section and choose the operating systems you’re currently using from a dropdown menu.
- Unzip the file into a folder where you can access it from any computer.
- After you’ve successfully installed ADB on your computer, you must configure your device to be able to communicate with it. Here are the instructions for setting up your device to communicate with ADB:
- On the phone, open the Settings app again and follow these steps for About Phone.
- Click on the Software Information option on this screen.
- After doing that, go back to settings > about phone > software version and hit the build number 7 times. You should then receive a toast message saying that “you’re a software engineer!”
- From the main screen, go back to Settings > Tap on the new Developer options icon > Tap on it.
- On the Developer Options screen, under Debugging, check the box next to USB debugging.
- Before that, read our latest post on the Samsung Galaxy S8/S7 Edge+ Smartphones.
Once you’ve got everything setup correctly, here’s how you remove all the Gear VR services on your phone:
- From the folder where you extracted your Android Debug Bridge (ADB) zip file earlier, open an empty area by clicking on the icon labeled “Open in Windows Terminal”.
- After connecting your phone to the computer, use the data connection provided by the USB port. we recommend the one you got with your charger because other ones may not be reliable.
- Type adb devices in the terminal window, then press return.
- If you get an error, type in ./adb devices to fix the issue.
- You will get prompt asking permission on your phone when you press enter, so accept that immediately.
- Now, both devices are connected. You need to delete three apps that are related to the Gear VR service. Type the following commands one by one and press enter.
- ADB shell pm uninstall -k –user 0 com.samsung.android.hmt.vrsvc
- adb shell pm uninstall -k –user 0 com.samsung.android.app.vrsetupwizardstub
- adb shell pm uninstall -k –user 0 com.samsung.android.hmt.vrshell
After that, you can disconnect both devices and disable the Developer options if you want.
That’s it! Gear VR services will not be bothering you anytime soon. If you go to the app list, you won’t see any Gear VR services.
One thing to note here is that if you ever format your phone, all the apps you deleted will reappear so you will have to type in the commands using ADB again.
We would also recommend you uninstall any Oculus apps while you are at it since those are useless without Gear VR.
